10 essential content modules to help Confluence and Jira Service Desk users find useful information

October 2, 2018

RefinedWiki’s apps come with many handy content modules to give teams the tools to display useful content well.

By well, we mean displaying content in a way that users can engage, navigate to find the answers they are searching for, while not get buried in information along the way. For agents and administrators of Atlassian platforms, configuring the content to be readily available requires no coding, just drag, drop and select with our smart and simple editors. For users, it’s a simple matter of fetching answers from a visual and easy to navigate interface.

Content management and especially Enterprise Content Management is a concept more and more businesses are becoming familiar with and implementing within their organizations. This is because easy access to useful content across and within teams is more important than ever.

RefinedWiki’s apps offer a wide selection of content modules to help build sites with a purpose and manage content at scale. Content modules are content tools that are used to build visual sites including Jira Service Desk customer portals (using RefinedTheme and RefinedSites), Confluence spaces (using RefinedSpaces) or Confluence dashboards and categories (RefinedTheme for Confluence).

We select 10 of the most useful content modules and demonstrate how you can put them in place.

10 useful content modules:

  1. Navigation Icon

  2. Navigation Highlight

  3. Navigation Content

  4. Search Highlight

  5. News

  6. Activity

  7. Pages

  8. Users

  9. My Requests

  10. Knowledge Base

1. Navigation Icon

Simple yet powerful quick link icons to the most useful content. This module is ideal for all welcome landing pages. Best practice is to add this navigation icon module to Confluence dashboard homes, Confluence Category and Space homes, and Jira Service Desk help centre landing pages with neat links to relevant page. The module comes with a large selection of ready made icons, and the option of adding an image as the icon. We recommend having a good understanding of the most important useful content users will want to navigate to, and use the icon as the navigation point.

This module is available in version 6.x of RefinedTheme for Confluence and is available in RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud, RefinedSites for Jira Service Desk Cloud and RefinedTheme for Jira Service Desk.

2. Navigation Highlight

This module is an easy way to build up Confluence and Jira Service Desk sites to look clean, modern, and generally visually appealing. Best practice is to add this module as a navigation block, or as a simple image block to improve the look of a page. Our RefinedTheme for Confluence Server demo site displays some great examples of how you can use this macro as a navigation block or as an image. Navigation highlight includes the choice of three different font sizes (and the colour of your choice).

Available in version 6.x of RefinedTheme for Confluence, RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud, RefinedSites for Jira Service Desk Cloud and RefinedTheme for Jira Service Desk.

3. Navigation Content

The Navigation Content Module is the one to use when you need a short written summary to the destination link, with and image, and the option of a button. A common use case for this module is on Jira Service Desk Customer portals, as a neat way to display a Confluence knowledge base, with a summary of what the knowledge base contains. Or if in general a link requires a short text summary.

Available in version 6.x of RefinedTheme for Confluence, RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud, RefinedSites for Jira Service Desk Cloud and RefinedTheme for Jira Service Desk.

4. Search Highlight

This module can be added to a Jira service Desk customer portal with RefinedSites and RefinedTheme. It can be added to a Confluence dashboard, category in the new release of RefinedTheme and on spaces and pages in RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud. This module displays a search box on a visual background (either an uploaded image or a colour of your choice). For the Jira Service Desk apps, the search functionality is extended by including recommended links.

Available in version 6.x of RefinedTheme for Confluence and in RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud, RefinedSites for Jira Service Desk Cloud and RefinedTheme for Jira Service Desk.

5. News Module

With a fresh UI in the up and coming release RefinedTheme for Confluence release, and a current feature in RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud, this module pulls news from a blog or news space and displays the news items in a neat thumbnails view. This is a great way to engage users with news by encouraging them to click on the news link.

Available in RefinedTheme for Confluence and RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud.

6. Activity Module

The activity module teams up well with the news module. Available in RefinedTheme for Confluence and RefinedSpaces, this module is a way to keep up to date on the latest activity and especially handy when using a space as a project collaboration to dive straight into the most recent work.

Available in RefinedTheme for Confluence and RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud.

7. Pages Module

This module displays pages as a thumbnail for easy navigation and a neat overview. If the page contains an image, this will show up on the page like you see in the image below.

Available in version 6.x of RefinedTheme for Confluence and in RefinedSpaces for Confluence Cloud.

8. Users

This module gives you four different options to display the users on the space. Our favourite is the avatar option where you simply display each users avatar.

This module is carried over from the last major RefinedTheme for Confluence release but with an updated editor and improved UI.

9. My Requests

This is the ticket to a really personalised Jira Service Desk. The my requests feature lists your current open requests on a Jira Service Desk customer portal.

Available in RefinedTheme for Jira Service Desk and RefinedSites for Jira Service Desk Cloud.

10. Knowledge Base

Last but not least this module lists knowledge base articles from a manually selected Confluence knowledge base. A quick and easy method to make answers available to customers without switching context.

Currently this module is only available for RefinedTheme for Jira Service Desk Server, however it is in the pipeline to be included in RefinedSites for Jira Service Desk Cloud.

Building up a Jira Service Desk site, or a Confluence site with useful information that is easy to navigate to can be challenging. RefinedWiki apps content modules are here to remove the challenge and make site building, theming and customization simple.
